The effects of housing financialization on urban space and urban life in Lisbon, Portugal.

This project will investigate the effects of housing financialisation on urban space in Lisbon and on the everyday lives of its residents. Housing financialisation is defined here as the treatment of housing as a financial asset; however, this is rooted in a commodified housing model that upholds private homeownership as the ideal (Madden & Marcuse 2016). While there is a small but growing literature on the financialisation of housing (see Aalbers 2008; Christophers 2015; Fainstein 2016; Fields 2015; Smith 2015), less is known about the impact of financialisation on everyday urban space/life and its relationship with socio-cultural norms and practices around homeownership.
