A Notational Analysis of Three Old Hispanic Manuscripts from Toledo

Old Hispanic chant is thought to have been used between the tenth and thirteenthcenturies on the Iberian Peninsula. Towards the end of this period, the Old Hispanic Ritebecame almost obsolete under Franco-Roman liturgical reforms, although there are severalsources which are dated to this later period, notably those which are attributed to Toledo.Understanding the cultural and political situation of Toledo that allowed the production of thesemanuscripts and observing the cultural traditions of certain groups within Toledan society,especially the Mozarabs, forms the focus of this project. To explore these practices, and tofacilitate comparison between Toledo and the Iberian Peninsula, I will concentrate on theproduction of three manuscripts from Toledo looking to identify their origins and understandinghow their notational scripts may relate to one another and to other, earlier Old Hispanicsources.
