The history of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (THFC) is inextricably intertwined with that of the local area and communities. The redevelopment of the White Hart Lane ground and surrounding areas to house the New Tottenham Stadium provides an opportune moment to analyse these linkages, with the club archive set to be made accessible to the public.The research focuses on understanding the club as a heritage community, linked with a diverse area of London and a global fan base. It combines archival historical research with community engagement methodologies to analyse the meaning of the club's heritage to groups of supporters at various junctures during the club's history, and the ways that contemporary fans and communities understand this.It addresses the following key questions:1. How has the club's relationship to Tottenham evolved since 1882?2. How and why have memories and traditions among supporters changed over time?3. How have new local communities interacted with the club's heritage?64. What roles can the archive play in fostering a sense of belonging within the area, and its communities?The objectives are to identify and analyse:1. The significance of the club's archives, collections and embodied memories in creating social meaning and values among supporters2. The role of living heritage and memory in the club's interactions with local communities3. The social, cultural, religious, creative, economic and political histories of the archives' makers, users and depositors.The project will deepen knowledge of the club's heritage, locating it in a broader, historically-informed context, and generate methodologies with general applications for the sporting heritage sector.
