The Research Engineer will be based at Swansea University and will work collaboratively with the Johnson Matthey Technology Centre (JMTC) in Reading, and will focus on next generation materials for selective catalysis and battery applications and interface to collaborative theory work at the University. The project work itself will entail the design and fabrication of specific nanoparticles with the new Swansea cluster source, aiming to enhance selectivity in model chemical transformations. These will be characterised by advanced electron microscopy and their chemical performance measured to tune the nanoparticle design. Nanoparticle beam deposition represents a radical new approach to the environmentally-friendly synthesis of nanoparticles for catalysis and biomedicine. The method is solvent and thus effluent free and avoids toxic salts, thus satisfying the growing demand for sustainable manufacture. In carrying out this project the Research Engineer will work within the Nanomaterials Laboratory at Swansea, which specialises in upscaling from the previous microgram level to the gram+ level, enabling frontier research and development.
