My project will develop fluidic valve technologies to control hydrogen fuel flow within future gas turbine engines. This research is conducted in partnership with Rolls Royce PLC which has identified hydrogen powered flight as a key technology to achieving net zero within the aviation industry. Fluidic valves can be utilised to control the flow of fluids with no moving parts and are thus highly reliable. The key objective of this project is to develop a valve controlling the flow of hydrogen into the combustor operating at engine-representative pressure ratios. This project will sit at the intersection of fluid dynamics and control theory. Scale-resolving computational fluid dynamics, including large eddy simulations, will be used to generate reduced order models. Novel dimensional reduction techniques such as dynamic mode decomposition will be utilised. These models will inform the design of the valve as well as being used to develop open-loop and closed loop control strategies. Robustness to exogenous disturbances including combustor instabilities, engine vibrations, and sensor noise will be simulated and the protype designs will be validated by experimental campaigns.
