Predicting material degradation and localised damage due to corrosion is a longstanding scientific challenge with important technological implications. From atmospheric stress corrosion cracking of dry store canisters to ageing degradation of water reactor components. There is an opportunity now to develop, for the first time, a generation of models that can explicitly resolve the underlying physics and deliver reliable predictions over sensible scales. This is made possible by the development of sophisticated multi-physics models and new phase field algorithms for tracking the evolution of complex interfaces.
