The Relation of Parts and Wholes in Plato

This project will analyse Plato's relation between parts and wholes (PWR), and its importance for ancient philosophy and modern mereology. The first part of the project, which focuses on Plato's predecessors (the Presocratics), determines their approach to PWR as framework for the second part, which will address PWR in dialogues of Plato typically overlooked by scholars. The parallels drawn between ancient and modern philosophers will demonstrate that Plato's PWR constitutes a ground-breaking contribution to the history of thought. This project will both generate debates in modern mereology and advance our understanding of later philosophical developments within ancient Platonism.
