'Gaping Silences Where Those Other Voices Should Be': Race, Gender, and Activism in Scotland, 1980s-1990s

The project analyses the multifaceted forms of activism (campaigning groups, cultural associations, community work, politically motivated literary production) of women of African, Afro-Caribbean, and Asian descent in 1980s-1990s Scotland. Such an analysis provides an original contribution to the literatureontheWomen'sMovementinBritain,suggestingthepresenceofadynamic,(politically)Black Feminist scene operating in Scotland at the time. In offering a gendered and more textured understanding of social relations, collective identities and political discourse in post-colonial Scotland, the project engages with the legacies of empire and the racially complex society that resulted from it in Scotland.
