Art Writing as Life Writing: Carla Lonzi and the 1980s

Stemming from the recent re-assessment of Carla Lonzi's legacy for feminist art history in Italy and beyond, this project examines her writings of the 1980s in light of recently accessible archives. The turn of the 1980s marked a paradigm shift in Lonzi's thinking within feminism which has so far been overlooked by scholars: while in the 1970s an approach towards 'deculturalisation' (Lonzi 1970) prevailed - focusing on the rebuttal of culture understood as the ideological apparatus of patriarchy - at the turn of the decade a desire to elaborate a 'different culture' emerged. This PhD project will examine the role that art writing played in Lonzi's imagination of such 'different culture', by concentrating on some of her lateexperimental projects. Not only will this project shed light on new directions of Lonzi's writing but it will also provide insight into the relationship between art history and the evolution of feminist politics in Italy at the end of the 20th century.
