Cost analysis of ancient buildings illuminates the economic and political systems that producedthem. This project undertakes cost analyses not only of the construction process, but also ofrunning costs. It does this by analysing two well documented building complexes on Rome'sCaelian Hill, situating them in their contemporary socio-economic context. Both the latesecond century CE imperial horse guards' fort, the Castra Nova, and the world's first cathedral,built over the fort's remains by Constantine, played an essential part in imperialtransformations of Rome, and offer ideal case studies to apply and develop cost analysis morewidely.
