The past, present and future of a community-owned estate: building resilient 'future heritage' in West Harris

The West Harris estate has experienced a unique twentieth-century trajectory: illegal land occupation; governmental purchase; and community land ownership. It nevertheless shares the vision of all community landowners: that the land drives sustainable development and community resilience; that a sense of inheritance from the past and robust future heritage are key to resisting the challenges, shared globally, of 'the Airbnb effect'. Through collaborative working, drawing together memory, archival research and co-produced visual materials, the student will explore the place of history and heritage as means to future resilience and foundational for tackling the challenges of overtourism in the twenty-first century
