The project examines the relationship between religious culture and nationalism in Imperial Germany (1871-1914) by investigating Protestant and Catholic responses to modern nation-building. The basic methodology employed is that of urban history. Specifically, it compares the former imperial towns of Ulm (Wurttemberg) and Augsburg (Bavaria). The following three areas will receive particular attention: education/schooling; immigration and the question of municipal citizenship; public festivals and commemorations.
