This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The FADD-caspase-8 complex constitutes a pathway to induced apoptosis in many cells. Enigmatically, both FADD and caspase-8 are necessary for T lymphocyte survival under conditions of antigen-induced activation. B cells are different in that activation through Toll-related receptors (TLRs), but not antigen receptors is FADD and caspase-8 dependent. In the absence of caspase-8 T cells undergo autophagy, and we are interested to determine whether the same is true for B cells.
