THE RELIABILITY OF DUCTAL LAVAGE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Breast ductal lavage (nipple ducts are cannulated with a microcather and lavaged with normal saline) is a new technique for collecting ductal cells. Since invasive and noninvasive breast cancers are derived from the epithelial cells that form the lining of breast ducts, it is hypothesized that information obtained from the cytological analysis of these cells may be useful for the early detection of breast cancer in asymptomatic women. 2. SPECIFIC AIMS There is currently no information regarding the reliability, sensitivity and specificity of ductal lavage in detecting breast cancer. This information is needed prior to widespread clinical application of the ductal lavage procedure. The aims of the proposed study are to evaluate: The Reliability of Ductal Lavage: Examine the acceptability of the ductal lavage procedure, the reliability of cannulating the same nipple duct and the reproducibility of the cytological diagnosis.
