ACTG A5163: ALENDRONATE IN HIV SUBJECTS WITH DECREASED BONE MINERAL DENSITY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. With the chronicity of HIV-related disease having been achieved, osteopenia has become a problem in a variable percentage of afflicted individuals. This is a phase II, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to assess the safety and efficacy of once-weekly bisphosphonate administration on osteopenia in men receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy. It will document the efficacy and safety of an intervention with Alendronate plus calcium in a double-blind fashion in reversing/arresting the degree of osteopenia at 48 weeks. Subjects continue to be enrolled on this study. No results are available yet.
