Gravitational Lensing, Gravitational Clustering, and the First Galaxies in the Universe

This project proposes to study gravitational lensing and clustering of the most distant galaxies discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope. The origin of the first galaxies represents a fundamental question motivating telescopes including the Square Kilometer Array and James Webb Space Telescope. This project will quantify the importance of gravitational lensing, discover the most distant lensed galaxies, measure clustering at the highest redshifts to date, and specify requirements for next generation first galaxy surveys. These results are crucial components of ongoing efforts to answer a range of questions including how and when the first galaxies formed. The research will provide a platform to train young researchers at the forefront of modern cosmology.
