VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTATION TO REDUCE GINGIVAL INFLAMMATION IN GINGIVITIS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Rationale: Anti-inflammatory effects of Vitamin D have been found in laboratory and animal studies. Hypothesis: Oral supplementation with vitamin D can reduce the susceptibility to experimental gingivitis. Design: This is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel group pilot clinical trial. We plan to recruit 48 healthy volunteers who will be randomized to vitamin D2 (50,000 IU twice per week for 5 weeks) or placebo (n=24 per group). 2 weeks after randomization, subjects will abstain from oral hygiene measures for 3 weeks. The extent to which gingivitis develops in response to plaque accumulation will be compared between groups. Furthermore, we will evaluate the association between serum levels of 25-OHD and the development of gingivitis as well as serum markers of inflammation.
