VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTATION TO REDUCE GINGIVAL INFLAMMATION IN GINGIVITIS IN HUMAN

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Rationale: Anti-inflammatory effects of Vitamin D have been found in laboratory and animal studies. Hypothesis: Oral supplementation with vitamin D can reduce the susceptibility to experimental gingivitis. Design: This is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel group pilot clinical trial. We plan to recruit 48 healthy volunteers who will be randomized to vitamin D2 (50,000 IU twice per week for 5 weeks) or placebo (n=24 per group). 2 weeks after randomization, subjects will abstain from oral hygiene measures for 3 weeks. The extent to which gingivitis develops in response to plaque accumulation will be compared between groups. Furthermore, we will evaluate the association between serum levels of 25-OHD and the development of gingivitis as well as serum markers of inflammation.
