CAROTID OCCLUSION SURGERY STUDY (COSS)

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The goal of this study is to test the hypothesis that surgical anastomosis of the superficial artery to the middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) when added to best medical therapy can reduce by 40%, despite perioperative stroke and death, the combined total of perirandomization stroke and death and subsequent ipsilateral ischemic stroke at two years in patients with recently (< 120 days) symptomatic internal carotid artery occlusion.
