CLINICAL TRIAL: THE EFFECT OF RISEDRONATE ON BONE TURNOVER AND BONE MASS IN OLDE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This proposal will examine a therapeutic intervention with risedronate in a population of men at high risk for bone loss. Carcinoma of the prostate gland is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in U.S. men, and is the second leading cause of cancer death. Over the last decade, more and more men are being treated with hormonal suppression therapy for locally advanced disease. Recent studies have shown that such hormonal suppression with Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone (LHRH) agonists leads to rapid bone loss and increased risk of osteoporotic fractures (1). The increased incidence of hip fractures and other fragility fractures in older men is a major public health issue. Hip fractures are costly, increase mortality and significantly compromise the independence and quality of life of the survivors. The potential for compounding this problem in men treated with hormonal suppression for locally advanced prostate carcinoma is the rationale for this study.
