Center Core The Center Core will provide the organizational and administrative structure and the support functions conducive to enhancing synergy among the components, fostering innovation, and promoting productive interaction among Center staff and students, under joint leadership from Brandeis and Harvard. Each organization brings a unique set of substantive skills that strengthens the collective expertise offered by the Center, which overlap in some cases and are complementary in others. Considered together, they constitute the necessary structure required to tackle the sophisticated issues and to conduct coordinated and comprehensive research on managed care and substance abuse treatment. Under the direction of the co-Directors and Deputy Directors, an Internal Advisory Board (IAB) will provide the main focus of coordination within the Center. Complementing the function of the IAB, An Extemal Advisory Board (EAB), composed of experts in a range of fields, will provide input to the Center and assist in the dissemination of the Center's findings. The IAB will be supported by four standing committees: (1) Research Support Committee (including methods support, statistical/programming support, and clinical support) will augment and enhance the expertise of the project teams, and will provide opportunities for cross-fertilization across projects; (2) the Quality Assurance Committee will review all projects and products resulting from the Center, to enhance quality, and contribute to the sharing of ideas across projects; (3) the Training and Mentoring Committee (including pilot projects and training/education) will foster the development of students and junior investigators, as well as other professionals; (4) the Dissemination Committee (including newsletter, web site, and technology transfer speaker's bureau ativities) - will direct the dissemination of information learned from the Center' s activities via multiple activities. The lAB will thus work to ensure the quality of the Center's research and training activities; to coordinate the projects to maximize the potential for sharing of methods, analyses, and results; to encourage synergy among the Center's members; and to ensure that members of the Center will be informed of each other' s work on a substantive and ongoing basis. The structure of the Center Core is designed to emphasize the recognition that the strength of the Center lies both in its individual projects, and in the synergy among the Center's members.
