The proposed research will provide a critically-needed focus for the advancement of the basic material and mechanics research required to develop models of material response under the gross deformation conditions associated with stamping and hydroforming of automotive body components and their in-service performance under crash conditions. The research will see development of state-of-the-art models of the ductile fracture process and the response of materials under high strain rate conditions. The focus will be on the design, processing and in-service performance of light weight sheet and tube for automotive stamping and hydroforming applications. The goal is optimization of manufacturability, coupled with optimal final in-service properties to obtain superior overall performance. Central to this research is the need to understand the behaviour of materials under the large-strain deformation conditions during product manufacture, as well as during the extreme loading experienced during an automotive crash event.      The proposed Discovery Grant research, coupled with a recently awarded Canada Research Chair held by the applicant, represents the core materials and mechanics research within a larger suite of industrially-funded projects (amounting to roughly $1M annually) that will support the direct application and transfer of this core science to industry. The applicant is well placed to undertake this research with major infrastructure for stamping, hydroforming, tube bending, electromagnetic forming, impact testing and high strain rate material characterization.
