Wind resource assessment methodologies for coastal, Nordic regions

The research work is related to the development of wind energy in Canada in general, and in Atlantic Canada in particular.  An important parameter for economically viable wind energy to generate electricity is the wind resource.  Our research work is related to the assessment of the wind resource potential in a region, more specifically in coastal, Nordic regions.  By having a better knowledge of the wind resource potential in the region, and in consideration of other constraints, the best sites for wind energy can be identified and can be developed. In order to better assess the wind resource potential with large scale models, more knowledge is needed to develop the models.  In particular, the shape of the atmospheric boundary layer at the level of the ground and up to approximately 100 m must be known with a good accuracy.  New methodologies will thus be developed to predict the shape of the atmospheric boundary layer as a function of the elements on the ground. A wind atlas of the region (Atlantic Canada) will be developed, in whole or in part, and transferred to the public domain, thus contributing to more information for the sustainable development of a new energy sector in Canada.
