The world is beleaguered by differences in opinion and contentious disagreements that often involve emergent and rapidly changing complex patterns of conflict. The recent global economic crisis highlighted the prevalence and challenges of collective bargaining and negotiation in regulating the term of employment and condition of work between unions and employers. The need for rigorous, formal conflict and negotiation analysis techniques, therefore, is more pressing than ever. To be robust, practical, and insightful such techniques must be based on perceptual and systems thinking approach that takes a holistic view of social interactions and considers both the strategic assessment of options and the complex psychological and sociological contexts.
