The continuous development of material science and engineering along with the increasing demand for improved design, safety and energy efficiency requirements necessitates the establishment and verification of new nonlinear theories to describe the vibrations and interaction between thin-walled structures and the surrounding fluid. The proposed research considers the study of nonlinear vibrations and dynamic stability of thin-walled structures with and without fluid-structure interaction. Thin shells, plates and curved panels (with single or double curvature) of traditional, laminated composite and Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) can be found in many engineering applications e.g. in aircraft, spacecraft, rockets, cars, submarines, boats and storage tanks. Shell structures are also part of many biological systems such as arteries, the pulmonary passage and veins found in the human body. The long term objective of the research is to develop a study addressing open problems with ground-breaking innovations in experimental, theoretical and numerical investigation, and to tackle problems of different areas (i.e. aeronautics, atomic energy and biomechanics) with a common approach. In particular, the aim is to improve existing theoretical models for the nonlinear vibrations and dynamic stability of shells, (i) by constructing a new consistent and highly accurate nonlinear shell theory including third-order shear deformation, rotary inertia and thickness deformation, which is particularly important for dynamics of shells made of soft biomaterials, and (ii) by including material nonlinearities, i.e. hyperelasticity, and viscoelasticity in order to study the dynamics of human aorta associated with acute aortic dissection. As short term objective, the research will focus on nonlinear vibrations, fluid-structure interaction, dynamic stability and active vibration control of shells and plates made of advanced materials (FGM, laminated materials and sandwich structures) in large-amplitude vibrations with applications in aerospace and atomic energy industries.
