Groundwater is an important source of freshwater for many Canadians. Most of the groundwater we use is relatively young and comes from the infiltration of atmospheric precipitation, but older water, often called fossil water, can also be found which infiltrated thousands of years ago. Some of these waters come from the melting of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which was an immense glacier that covered the entire Canadian landscape about 21,000 years ago. The infiltration of freshwater into organic-rich deposits also stimulated micro-organisms that transformed organic matter into natural gas. In some locations, this gas production has become economically important.
