The introduction of phasor measurement units (PMUs) represents a significant shift in the ability of utility companies to monitor and control their assets over a wide area. This is due to two key factors. The first is an unconventionally high reporting rate---typically 30 or 60 frames per second in North America, depending on the standard used. This is orders of magnitude higher than legacy data collection, which relies on scanning individual devices every few seconds (or minutes). The second major benefit of PMUs lies in the utilization of globally-synchronized sampling of system voltages and currents, achieved via GPS-based timing.
