The potential benefits of using electromagnetic effects within aerodynamic with flow control purposes is an area of research that has generated numerous studies in the last years. Potential benefits of such technology include several commercial and military applications, which have been subject of attention and investment worldwide. However, most of the research is still focused on understanding key parameters affecting performance of such electro-hydrodynamic (EHD) devices, since there are several issues to be overcome before they can be integrated into practical applications. The effects of operating conditions on EHD actuator performance, electrical power requirements, and suitability to high-speed regimes (e.g., those encountered in aerospace) must be addressed before the application of such devices to practical systems. Due to their simplicity, an EHD device of particular consideration is the so called dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator. The possibility of using EHD actuator to mitigate noise emissions from land gears has prompted high interest to Bombardier Aerospace (BA).
This research aims to develop DBD plasma actuators technology for use in advanced flow management systems and to build on Canada's existing expertise on the topic. In addition to continued research on the physics of plasma actuators, the proposed research will also implement these actuators in a proof of concept experiment with the aim of reducing noise emissions from a landing gear using active flow control methodology. The experimental work at the University of Toronto will be support by numerical simulations from the industrial partner, Bombardier Aerospace.
