Connaître la balance de carbone de nos activités quotidiennes est devenu primordial à cause du rôle du carbone dans les changements climatiques. La forêt boréale et le secteur des produits forestiers constituent un puits de carbone. En Suède, une analyse complète de la forêt et du secteur forestier indique que l'aménagement de la forêt a un effet positif sur la séquestration de carbone. Cependant, peu d'études ont examiné l'impact de l'ensemble de la chaîne de valeur des forêts sur les bilans de carbone de l'industrie (p.ex. récolte, préparation de terrain, plantation, produits de bois transformés) dans les conditions canadiennes. Les forêts boréales accumulent de la matière organique sur les sols minéraux et ces couches constituent à la fois une limite à la productivité forestière et un réservoir important et stable de nutriments et de carbone qui assurent la fertilité à long terme des forêts. D'autre part, cette même matière organique, sous la forme de tourbe, pourrait être valorisée pour la restauration de sites miniers à proximité des sites forestiers, créant une synergie entre deux industries qui se côtoient en région boréale canadienne pour favoriser l'exploitation durable des ressources naturelles. Il en résulte que la gestion de la couche organique des sols forestiers soulève des défis importants dans un contexte d'aménagement forestier durable qui vise l'atteinte de multiples objectifs d'ordres écologique, économique et sociaux. Dans ce contexte, nous proposons un projet dont l'objectif général est de documenter l'impact de la sylviculture, particulièrement la gestion de la matière organique, sur les réservoirs de carbone des arbres et du sol. La détermination de l'effet des travaux sylvicoles sur le bilan de carbone, et cela à l'échelle du peuplement, est un élément clé pour la certification forestière, essentielle pour l'accès aux marchés. En plus, nos travaux vont permettre à l'industrie à déterminer dans quelles positions dans le paysage les travaux sylvicoles ont le plus d'effet sur la productivité des arbres. Nous allons aussi explorer des nouvelles façons de valoriser des résidus crées par la sylviculture, via leur utilisation hors site.
