英文摘要
Although the benefits of using timber in mid- and high-rise construction are undisputed, there are perceived shortcomings with respect to a corresponding lack of appropriate design guidance. Overcoming these perceived shortcomings will allow timber, and its wood product derivatives, to further expand into the non-residential construction sector. Timber connections with glued-in steel rods have a series of advantages, e.g., the formation of very stiff and strong connections while still facilitating a desired ductile failure mode of steel yielding. As such they constitute a promising solution for numerous structural applications, including for moment-resisting connections as part of the seismic force resisting system of a structure. In Canada, however, glued timber moment connections are not yet widely used, partially due to the perceived risk of a brittle wood splitting failure and partially due to a lack of design guidance. In this project, moment-resisting connections with glued-in steel rods will be experimentally tested considering different geometric configurations (number of steel rods and with/without splitting reinforcement) and different external loading configurations (monotonic and cyclic loading). A statistically significant number of specimens will be tested, and the load-deformation behaviour in a selected subset of tests will be monitored. The research results will allow the industry partner to safely design moment-resisting connections for timber structures using glued joints. The research will further lay the groundwork for subsequent collaborative research addressing a wider range of design parameters and applications. The project has the potential to have an impact on the structural use of timber, increase its market share in non-residential construction, and thus positively influence sustainability of the construction industry by using more renewable resources.
