Waterloo Biofilter Systems Inc. is a Canadian-owned and operated company that develops, designs, manufactures and maintains advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems. Waterloo Biofilter technology provides a variety of innovative decentralized sewage treatment solutions for residential (individual homes & clustered or communal systems), commercial (golf course, restaurant, resort, etc.), light industrial and small municipal applications. All Waterloo Biofilter treatment units utilize a patented high-efficiency filter medium to support and sustain biological populations that degrade contaminants found in wastewater. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. The LEED program encourages and accelerates the global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices by setting out building performance standards in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Waterloo Biofilter's compact nature and high treatment levels provide for one of the smallest system and disposal field footprints available, helping to reduce the development's total footprint and maximize vegetated open spaces. However, LEED Green Building wastewaters have unique characteristics i.e. low solids content with high-ammonia concentration and thus its treatment is challenging compared to the conventional wastewater. Therefore, evaluating the effect of nitrogen to carbon (N/C) ratio and the solid retention time in the septic and pumping tanks prior to the biofilter is essential to optimize the Waterloo Biofilter treating LEED Green Building wastewaters and identify the optimum design criteria.
