The Development of Automated Anemia Control Algorithms

Anemia is the condition of low Hemoglobin (Hgb) or low red blood cells (RBC) in the blood. Hemoglobin is an important component of RBC and transports oxygen to organs and tissues in the body. Low oxygen delivery to organs and tissues in the body can cause excessive tiredness and contribute to heart problems. In chronic renal failure (CRF), the kidney does not produce enough erythropoeitin, vital for the production of RBC's. In the current practice, decisions on the treatment of anemia in CRF are in general made without considering all (or sufficient) factors due to the limited time spent on each patient by a doctor and the lack of an efficient model characterizing the interplay between different factors. In this project, we will develop an automated anemia treatment recommendation system to help doctors to make optimal treatment decisions. The automated anemia treatment recommendation system will take into account all the available data or information of a patient and take advantage of the computing power of modern computers to make optimal treatment recommendations. It is anticipated that the successful development of the automated anemia treatment recommendation system would significantly improve the treatment of anemia in Canada.
