Weather Telematics is a company that collects weather data at small time intervals through the use of mobile sensors placed on road vehicles travelling throughout North America. This operation resulted in the creation of a massive database. The purpose of this project is to investigate the possibility to convert the collected data into information regarding traffic road conditions. The information collected by Weather Telematics complements the Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) Systems maintained by each State in the US. It is expected that this extra information, if combined properly with RWIS information, will allow for a finer grain and more accurate assessment of traffic road conditions at specific locations. The practicality and benefit of the products that can be derived from this research makes this project particularly exciting: bus or delivery service companies could transmit real-time road safety information to their bus or truck drivers, allowing them to modify their route prior to being caught in suboptimal or even dangerous driving conditions.
