Tissue as consumer products is a growing market segment and can capture significantly more value if the performance can be enhanced. Critical functional properties of a tissue, such as bulk, strength and softness are achieved through a manufacturing known as Creping. Despite its critical importance, the science of creping is not well understood. There is very little public knowledge in this area due to secretive nature of tissue business and as well as due to the complex interactions among multiple mechanisms involving creping chemicals, crepe blades, raw pull materials and operating conditions such as doctor blade angle, among others. The proposed research engagement with Forest Products Innovattions, Canada is on understanding mechanics of creping using a combination of mechanistic models and experiments on a real life pilot tissue machine at FPI facilities in Montreal. This proposal is intended to form a basis for long term research program on mechanics of tissue creping with involvement from FPI scientists based in Montreal and Vancouver. Successful completion of this ENGAGE research with FPI Canada is expected to lead to a long term research program in untangling the complexities of the tissue creping and making the underlying science and technology available to Canadian industries in tissue market.
