The approximately 200 km diameter, 1.8 billion year old Sudbury impact structure, Ontario, is the largest and richest mining district in North America (past production plus current inventory, using todays prices, is estimated at $400 billion). This region has been mined since 1883 but despite this, there are still major outstanding questions concerning our understanding of the Sudbury structure and its ore deposits. The proposed research seeks to investigate the original and significance of so-called Offset Dykes and Sudbury Breccia and their association with mineral deposits. The potential discovery of a new Offset Dyke in the northeast of the Sudbury structure will be investigated. The results of the proposed research will address significant gaps in our current knowledge of the origin and emplacement of the Sudbury Breccia and Offset Dykes, which are important ore hosts.
