英文摘要
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic chemicals that are present ubiquitously in the environment.
Their concentrations in many environmental matrices are regulated in Canada to levels that cannot be detected
by typical analytical methods. This project, in conjunction with AGAT Laboratories, will develop new methods
for the analysis of PAHs. Gas chromatography separation with detection by mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is the
standard analytical tool for PAH analysis. Using hydrogen as a carrier gas and large-volume injections, this
project will address three goals: i) reducing reliance on expensive, non-renewable helium for gas
chromatography analysis; ii) decreasing the analysis time for gas chromatography analyses; and iii) increasing
the sensitivity of their analysis methods to achieve lower detection limits and expand sample market. New
analytical methods that are more efficient and sensitive will be developed and validated for detection of PAHs
in environmental samples by GC-MS. Incorporation of these new methods will improve the ability of AGAT
Laboratories to detect toxic PAHs using standard laboratory equipment. This will both increase the market of
AGAT Laboratories and reduce per sample costs. By increasing the sensitivity and efficiency of environmental
methods for toxic, trace organics, this project will improve understanding of Canadian environmental PAH
concentrations and the resulting impacts to human health.
