To analyze and design future electrical energy systems, engineers and researchers should have effective and powerful modelling and simulation tools. Canada, and Manitoba HVDC Research Centre, has been the leader in developing such tools and providing engineering services in this area. This proposal is to pursue the engagement of the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre. The Electric Power and Energy Systems research group at UBC has a long history of contributions in power systems transients, modeling/simulation of various power systems components. The first part of this Engage project was a success, and we are extending the project to Engage Plus. The simulation software program developed at Manitoba HVDC Research Centre PSCADTM/EMTDCTM is widely used. Conventional electrical generators in power systems are three-phase synchronous machines which are directly connected to the utility networks. However, the power systems of ships, aircraft, vehicles, advanced renewable energy sources and systems, and other and special purpose systems may use take advantage of unconventional six-phase generators for better electro-mechanical performance, controllability, and reliability reasons. These types of ac machines are not available in most commonly-used simulation programs including PSCAD. A six-phase synchronous generator model for electromagnetic transient simulation programs was developed in the initial Engage grant. In the course of this project, several areas for improvement were discovered, which requires more research and development. The proposed improvements will yield more accurate simulation of generators used in advanced renewable energy systems and electrical drive applications. The result of this project will also improve the models implemented in the PSCAD software. Our state-of-the-art modeling techniques are envisioned to improve the models of the other components used in software tools such as PSCAD, and will bring more high-tech business to Canada.
