Globally and across Canada cities are challenged in providing sustainable water and sanitation services. With population expansion in major cities and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it has become more difficult for municipalities to keep extending existing centralized water supply lines for wastewater collection and treatment, let alone maintaining aging infrastructure. One option that improves upon economic, environmental and societal goals compared to conventional centralized services is a blackwater-only sewer (toilet and kitchen food streams) separate from household greywater.
