This proposed research is to investigate the feasibility of recycling superabsorbent polymer solidified excavation spoils as a backfill material. Excavation conducted underwater generates a significant amount of slurry spoils. An innovative solidification technique using superabsorbent polymer (SAP) has been developed to easily handle the spoils and generated significant savings in spoil handling and transportation. However, these SAP solidified spoils are disposed to dump sites due to lack of geotechnical testing data to support its usage as a backfill material and engineering fill materials have to be brought in to backfill the trenches or holes in the ground. It would be a significant saving if the SAP solidified spoil can be used as a backfill material.
