It is increasingly evident that buildings are facing mounting risks due to the ever-changing hazards, and thetightening requirements and expanding complexity of building designs. Due to the tight coupling betweenbuilding systems of different types, failures can cascade across a building and its operation. This state wouldbenefit from an integrated approach to risk assessment in the engineering design process that can model anddepict cascade effects.Completion of the research to meet this challenge is planned through four modules intended to study thepotential of a new workflow to augment building design efforts and a new method to support the workflow.Module one concerns experimenting with creating a 3D scan of existing buildings and Module two concernsconverting these into Building Information Models (BIM). Combined, these modules are about determininghow suitable data can be produced of a building to model cascading risk and may include augmentation withother information about the building or its operation such as condition assessments or other simulations of thebuilding (e.g., structural) to produce a workflow that can populate risk parameters. Module three is the creationof a custom VR simulation that ingests the data from the other modules and allows clients to experience thecascade of hazard effects across building components. The final component is the creation of a risk assessmentand decision support system within the simulation platform that incorporates a cascading risk computation inconcert with the building information in the simulation to support engineering design.Canada benefits through the creation of innovative engineering and technology, further advancing Canada'sposition as a world leader by providing our engineers with new capability. Further, application of the capabilitydomestically can serve to reduce the risk to Canadian buildings.
