National Concrete Accessories (NCA) is a world leader that specializes in a variety of products used in theconcrete reinforcement industry, including lifting inserts and anchors used to handle and transport precastconcrete elements. NCA provides design guidance and support for applications of their products to practicingengineers, contractors, and architects. It has recently emerged that not enough is understood about the specificfailure modes and behaviour of newly developed anchoring systems, especially under unique design scenariosand varying load distributions. Determining the behaviour and failure mechanisms of these anchor systemsunder both typical and unique design scenarios would allow for more accurate strength estimations and moreefficient designs. This research aims to understand how the design parameters of steel anchor rods in concrete(e.g. edge distance, embedment depth, and loading conditions) effect their ultimate strength and mode offailure. In addition, finite element modelling of these anchor systems will allow for more in-depth analysis oftheir behaviour and assist in the development of anchor strength models and design examples. This informationwill directly impact and be used by practicing Canadian engineers engaged in the design and handling ofprecast elements and ultimately strengthen the Canadian precast concrete industry.
