Engagement with Spartan: exploring organic thin film transistors for DNA sensor

This proposal will support the new collaboration between Spartan Bioscience Inc. a nanotech company fromOttawa, Ontario and the Lessard research group at the University of Ottawa. Spartan's technology fullyintegrates DNA collection, extraction and analysis, with an intuitive interface that is easy to operate. Thecompany has interests in exploring new sensors for DNA detection to ultimately reduce costs and increaseprofitability. Spartan Bioscience Inc. is interested in the possibility of applying printed electronics as a route toimprove their system, however the majority of the R & D department is focused on the existing technologydevelopment and lack the expertise required to fully evaluate this emerging technology. The Lessard researchgroup has experience in organic electronic sensor fabrication and characterization that can validate the use oforganic thin film transistors (OTFTs) as a possible sensing route for single stranded DNA. The results from thisengagement would further illustrate the potential of OTFT based DNA sensors and the use of printed electronicdevices and help design the next generation DNA testing system.
