The rapid growth of Canadians urban population and the associated environmental concerns are partlyinfluencing city planners and construction stakeholders to consider "Sustainable Urbanization" alternatives. The sustainable urbanization has emerged as a viable solution towards smart and liveable cities that areresilient and environmentally friendly. In 2015, the National Building Code of Canada has raised the heightlimits on timber frame construction from 4 to 6 storeys. As of 2017, the tallest tall-wood building, is an18-story Brock Commons student residency at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The primary lateralload resisting element, for wind and earthquake loads, is two concrete shear walls. This type of system isknown as hybrid building. Even though light timber frame construction is limited to 6-storey, with theintroduction of mass-timber buildings, coupled with innovative bracing system, in this proposal, it isenvisioned to extend the height to 30-story timber building and develop relevant design guideline. The bracingentails use of dampers and energy-dissipator connectors. It is envisioned that the design guideline wouldenhance the confidence of architects, structural engineers, owners and contractors, towards tall mass-timberbuildings. In the long term the final outcome of the proposed research would increase the volume of wood inbuildings, which will support the forestry business in Canada and engineers at Nordic in particular by:-maximizing the appropriate use of wood in public and private projects,-Strengthening Canada's capacity to produce high quality wood-based products and building systems, and-accelerating adoption of existing and emerging wood-based products and building systems.
