Many force feedback virtual reality simulators use linear actuators. However, available linear actuators sufferfrom a significant cogging response during operation. This is a significant complication since the forcefeedback response should feel analogous to the forces experienced in reality. In the proposed research project, acogging-free linear actuator will be developed. This will be achieved by redesigning the magnet packing andthe use of ferromagnetic material in the motor to obtain a uniform magnetic field rather than developing anadditional means of control. The development of the new clogging-free actuator technology will underpin Iris' ambition to expand salesbeyond its current niche market of force-feedback flight yokes into Helicopter Cyclics and motion platformsused for helicopter simulation which require high precision force-feedback response. In addition, the projectwill directly serve the West Coast Wave Initiative's development of a sustainable energy technology solution byproviding cost-efficient simulators for the development of Wave Energy Converters which must provide forcefeedback that mimics the reactions of the actual system.
