Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, and skin cancer is one of the common types of the disease.Fortunately, the detection of skin cancer is comparatively easy since in most cases the symptoms can berecognized on visual inspection of the skin. However, limited access to dermatologists and long wait times forroutine consultation are the main constraints for early diagnosis of skin cancer, which is key to a successfultreatment. To address this problem, MetaOptima has developed MoleScope, a low-cost, smart skin imagingsystem. The MoleScope has an optical setup that attaches to a smartphone to acquire high-quality magnifiedimages. Using a MoleScope, patients can monitor and track changes in their skin moles and obtain rapidevaluations of cancer risk by sending the images of suspect skin lesions to their dermatologist. The aim of this project is to modify the current successful optical setup of the MoleScope device to improvethe quality and resolution of the images by suppressing optical aberrations and stray reflections. We will alsodesign and develop a new optical magnifier system with a choice of magnification including a highermagnification capability. The result of this project will allow the MoleScope to be used to examine a broaderrange of medically relevant structures with improved accuracy.
