This project is a collaboration between Arc'teyx and Dr. Matthew White to assess a novel lightweightemergency shelter system for backcountry emergencies. The anticipated outcome of the project is a demonstration of the efficacy and performance of an Arc'teryxnovel lightweight emergency shelter system to be employed in outdoor rescues.Arc'teryx has identified a critical need for research to understand how best to design a novel lightweightemergency shelter system so as to maximize thermal comfort and safety of rescuers and patients in coldtemperature, remote backcountry emergency settings. Recreationalists, outdoor workers, military, and searchand rescue (SAR) personnel often engage in activities in remote environments where immobilization due toinjury, weather, or other hazards is likely. There is a need for better lightweight emergency shelters for thesegroups to protect themselves against hypothermia and cold injury in such extreme environmental settings.Together with the experts at SFU, this project will help train new experts and provide new methods to help theArc'teryx team to design the best lightweight emergency shelter system for use by active Canadians in harshand cold environments.Economic benefits to Canada include contributions to building of expertise in highly qualified personnel in therapidly expanding SAR and technical apparel industry sector. Environmental benefits include better outcomesand less resources/personnel needed for backcountry rescues. Social benefits include development of advancedand safe group rescue methods.
