Sky Clean Energy Ltd. (SKY), an industry leader in Canada's renewable energy (RE) industry, is interested in pursuing research work to develop a framework used for designing a charging network for electric vehicles (EV) that is powered using solar energy technology. SKY has teamed up with the University of Waterloo to develop a computational-based infrastructure that will improve the decision-making process, determining the feasibility of implementing a particular renewable energy technology in a certain geographical region. The aim of this study is to design an electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure based on solar energy technology whilst considering rooftop area of structures within a particular region. Since solar energy is intermittent in nature, a multi-period model is proposed to be developed, mainly incorporating solar data, available space and energy demand by electric vehicles. Furthermore, the mathematical program will be able to identify the optimal regions for installation of RE technology and the type of technology to be employed. On the other hand, different level chargers will be considered based on the available charging technology. A case study will be carried out on the City of Toronto, to investigate the applicability of the proposed program. Uncertainty will be tackled by either conducting sensitivity analyses or incorporating stochasticity into the developed model. The proposed study will yield economic costs and environmental gains realized with the implementation of the proposed technology. In addition, life-cycle emissions may be studied if local production of this particular technology is considered.******
