Recent advances on the synthesis and surface modification of nanoparticles have opened the potential to develop rapid-response and highly sensitive pathogen detection systems. However, the wide range properties of the different types of nanoparticles currently available complicate the selection of a suitable nanoparticle substrate for a pathogen sensing system. Genemis Laboratories Inc. specializes in microbiological water testing. However, further development of their proprietary pathogen sensing technology is hindered by the availability of substrates able to anchor pathogen sensing systems that do not interfere with the sensor response. The proposed project aims at narrowing up the options available for a nanoparticle substrate able to host a carbohydrate/chromophore pair able to detect pathogens in water.
