Real time Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation platforms have revolutionized power system evaluation. By using a power amplifier with a HIL system, real power apparatuses can connect to a simulated grid in the platform to perform Power-HIL simulations. However, power apparatuses and PHIL platforms exhibit instability issues due to their nonlinear and latency characteristics. As a result, PHIL systems generate oscillation and suffer from unstable operation, and this has prevented their adoption by power systems simulation companies like project partner RTDS Technologies Inc. The proposed project will identify causes for instability observed in PHIL systems. Each component in the PHIL will be characterized using a Gain-Phase analyser and modelled to study the frequency response of the component. These characteristics can be used to determine the cause of the instability and verify them with a PHIL setup. This is a 6-month project working with RTDS Technologies Inc. that includes modelling, characterization, system implementation, and experimental evaluation. Two HQP will be trained in this project. A laboratory setup and technical reports will be transferred to the company at the end of the project, and this will benefit the RTDS Technologies Inc. by providing a stable power apparatus evaluation platform.
