Stackpole International is a manufacturer of automotive drivetrain parts using powder metal as a raw material. In order to remain commercially competitive and extend product offerings, Stackpole continually searches for ways to optimize production efficiency and maximize product quality. The focus of this project is the development a fuller understanding of how powder metal manufacturing processes can be modified to better control the damping characteristics of the solid metal parts produced. Success will result in a range of clearly defined process conditions that will facilitate improved manufacturing efficiency and allow control over part damping characteristics. Both of these outcomes will significantly improve Stackpole's profitability.****The objectives of this project are two-fold. The first will be to establish an accurate knowledge base relating powder metal manufacturing parameters with the formation of microstructures and pores in the powder metal solid parts. This knowledge base will be built on existing research results and a series of experiments. The second objective will be to develop accurate relationships between microstructure and porosity in the powder metal parts and their effects on damping (vibration frequency response attenuation). My contributions will be in the area of vibration response measurements (using modal analysis techniques) that are then correlated with manufacturing input parameters and modeling (using Finite Element Analysis) results. The ultimate goal is to provide constraints on the manufacturing process input parameters that will allow better control over final product quality.**
